President Mahama Calls for Modern, Profitable Agriculture

President John Dramani Mahama has urged a transformation of Ghana’s agricultural sector, stressing the need for modernization, profitability, and youth involvement.

Speaking at the Ghana Tree Crop Investment Summit, President Mahama emphasized that agriculture must be positioned as a driver of national development. “Agriculture must be modern, it must be profitable, and it must be attractive to young people,” he stated.

He also highlighted the importance of promoting Ghanaian produce in local and international markets, expressing concern over the prevalence of imported products. “I want to travel and be able to buy cashew and see produce of Ghana, not produce from India or some third-party country,” he remarked.

The summit brought together stakeholders in the tree crop industry to explore investment opportunities and strategies for boosting production, processing, and export. President Mahama underscored that Ghana’s agricultural future depends on harnessing innovation, building value chains locally, and ensuring farmers benefit directly from their work.

The call reflects government’s broader agenda to strengthen agribusiness, reduce reliance on imports, and secure Ghana’s place in global agricultural trade.
