Police Arrest Suspect with Over 700 Slabs of Suspected Narcotics in Ashanti Region

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect for unlawful possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs during an operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, Atampugri Akanyani, was apprehended on January 26, 2026, when a police team on snap check duty intercepted a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25 at the Asanso checkpoint.

A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered nine nylon sacks concealed within the bus. Upon inspection, the sacks were found to contain a total of 713 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.

During the arrest, Akanyani allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of GH¢150,000.00, which was firmly declined by the police.

The suspect is currently in custody assisting with investigations. Authorities say efforts are underway to trace the origin of the suspected narcotics and identify other individuals linked to the offence.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring public safety across the region.
