Parliamentary Committee Urges End to Sand-Winning at Nawuni Water Intake

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon. John Oti Bless, has appealed to residents of the Tamale Metropolitan Area and surrounding communities to halt sand-winning activities at the Nawuni water intake point.

The appeal follows a complaint by the Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr. Stephen Amihere-Mensah, who disclosed that the persistent sand-winning in the area causes critical pumping components to break down almost every month, disrupting water supply operations.

Hon. Oti Bless assured that the Water Resources Commission will work closely with the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to enforce existing by-laws aimed at protecting water bodies from pollution and environmental degradation.

As part of its working visit to the Northern Region, the Committee also inspected the Dalun Water Treatment Plant in the Kumbungu Constituency to assess its operations and challenges.
