The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has announced its role in the conviction of Asante Kwaku Berko, former Managing Director of Tema Oil Refinery and former Executive Director at Goldman Sachs, who was found guilty in the United States of conspiring to pay and paying more than $1 million in bribes to Ghanaian officials.
On August 6, 2026, a federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, convicted Berko — a dual citizen of Ghana and the United States — for his role in facilitating bribes between 2014 and 2015 to secure the development and financing of a power plant in Ghana under a deal involving Turkish energy company Aksa Enerji Uretim A.S., a Goldman Sachs client.
The OSP said it provided investigation and evidentiary assistance to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) through Ghana’s mutual legal assistance framework. The United States Department of Justice acknowledged the OSP’s contribution as “significant assistance to this prosecution.”
Berko faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for November 10, 2026. The OSP described the case as a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of international cooperation in combating cross‑border crime.
According to the OSP, while the cooperation between the FBI and Ghanaian authorities took place behind the scenes, the conviction underscores the importance of mutual legal assistance in achieving successful prosecutions.
The announcement reinforces Ghana’s commitment to strengthening accountability and transparency in public office, while highlighting the growing role of international partnerships in tackling corruption and financial crimes.
