Government has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, reclaiming nine previously captured forest reserves and pledging to outlaw mining in all reserves.
President Mahama disclosed that a repeal of LI-2462 was underway to formally end mining concessions in protected forests. “Not a single license has been issued since I assumed office, and none will be,” he emphasized.
He revealed that over 440 excavators and 900 water pumps had been seized, with some pumps handed over to farmers for irrigation. A new “Blue-Water Guard” force of 2,000 personnel is being recruited to protect rivers and forests.
“Our Tree for Life initiative is restoring degraded lands, and we are determined to win the fight against galamsey for future generations,” the President said.
