NCA Serves Suspension Notice to DStv, Allows 30 Days for Response

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has officially informed Multichoice Ghana Limited of its intent to revoke the company’s license to operate its Pay TV service in Ghana.

The announcement, made on Thursday, August 7, pertains to Multichoice’s Subscription Management Service for its Satellite Television Broadcasting (Direct-to-Home Bouquet), and is driven by mounting concerns over the company’s pricing strategy.

In a statement released in Accra, the NCA referenced Section 13 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), as the legal foundation for its proposed action.

According to the Authority, Multichoice Ghana’s current pricing approach is “considered harmful to the public interest,” prompting regulatory intervention.

While the NCA did not detail the exact elements of the pricing model that led to the decision, industry analysts have linked it to widespread public dissatisfaction over repeated and sharp increases in subscription fees.

In line with statutory requirements, Multichoice Ghana has been granted a thirty (30) day window to respond.

Within this timeframe, the company is permitted to present its case, propose corrective measures, and submit a formal objection to the proposed suspension.

This move represents a pivotal moment in the regulatory engagement between the NCA and one of the country’s leading pay TV operators.

“This notice is part of a fair and transparent regulatory process aimed at ensuring that service providers operate in a manner that protects the interests of consumers,” the statement affirmed.

Should the suspension take effect, it may interrupt access to widely viewed satellite television services for thousands of customers nationwide.

Nonetheless, the NCA reiterated that its actions are rooted in a duty to safeguard public welfare and shield consumers from exploitative pricing.

Multichoice Ghana has not yet released an official statement in response to the notice.

Meanwhile, the NCA has urged subscribers to remain calm and assured the public of its ongoing commitment to fair and responsible oversight of the communications sector.

Additional updates are anticipated once the company submits its response within the designated period.
