The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has strongly condemned recent inciteful remarks made by a religious preacher alleged to have spoken derogatorily about the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
In a statement issued by his office, His Eminence described such utterances as inconsistent with Islamic teachings and Ghana’s peaceful, democratic, and religiously diverse society. He stressed that religious disagreements must never lead to violence or incitement, and called for responsible preaching, tolerance, and mutual respect among all faith groups.
The Chief Imam acknowledged the preacher’s subsequent apology and urged Muslims and all citizens to remain calm and refrain from any acts that could disturb public peace. “Our commitment must always be to peaceful coexistence, religious tolerance, and national unity,” the statement noted.
The press release reaffirmed the Chief Imam’s dedication to protecting Ghana’s peace, stability, and security, while encouraging religious leaders to use their platforms to promote understanding and harmony.
Observers say the intervention underscores the Chief Imam’s longstanding role as a moral voice for unity and peace in Ghana, particularly at moments of heightened religious sensitivity.
