National Chief Imam Condemns Ho Central Mosque Shooting, Calls for Calm

The National Chief Imam of Ghana, Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has strongly condemned the shooting incident that occurred at the Central Mosque in Ho on Friday, December 26, 2025, describing the act as unfortunate and calling for restraint, justice and peaceful coexistence.

In a statement issued on his behalf by Sheikh Dr. Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo, the Chief Imam expressed deep sympathy to the families of the victims and the Muslim community in Ho, as well as to the entire nation. He described the incident as distressing and a threat to national peace and unity.

The Chief Imam noted that, based on available information, the violence appeared to stem from an unresolved dispute over the legitimacy of the Volta Regional Imamship. He stressed that such disputes should be addressed through dialogue, consultation and mediation, not through violence.

“Islam vehemently abhors violence and advocates tolerance, harmony and peaceful resolution of conflicts,” the statement said, adding that the selection of a Sheikh Murinu should never be imposed but resolved through established consultative processes.

The Chief Imam also reminded Muslims of the high value Islam places on human life, particularly the protection of children and the innocent, and urged all parties involved to reflect on these teachings.

He appealed to Muslim leaders and community elders to demonstrate leadership by de-escalating tensions and guiding their followers toward peace. Additionally, he called on law enforcement agencies to act impartially and professionally in handling the matter to ensure justice and prevent further unrest.

Quoting the Holy Qur’an, the statement urged reconciliation: “The believers are brothers. So make reconciliation between your brothers. And fear Allah, so that you may receive mercy” (Qur’an 49:10).

The Chief Imam concluded by praying for the swift recovery of the injured and for peace and blessings upon the Ummah and the nation of Ghana.

Authorities have yet to release full details on the incident, but investigations are ongoing.
