Mother and her three children drown in a dyke at laklevikope.

Residents in Laklevikope in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region, on Saturday 17th September 2022  were left in a state of shock after a family of five got drown while fishing in the lagoon in the area with the man in the family being the only survivor.

The deceased a woman said to be in her late 30s and her 3 children all perished after trying to save one of the children who fell into a dyke created by a a salt mining company named Seven sea salt company limited.

The dyke which is about 12ft has know become a danger zone for residents of laklovikope who are fisher folks.

According to the Assembly member of the area, Victor  Ayaku ,he  said the activities of the salt mining company have made the residents who are fisher folks living in fear as they can no longer go fishing.

He also noted that the community for several years now have not benefited from the salt company since they started operating in the area.

” As i speak this big electoral area, excuse me to say we don’t have a public toilet. I keep crying as an Assembly member, we  need a public toilet. I don’t know over the years what this company ( Seven Sea Salt Mining Company) has been doing for  the area.  What development can they show they are doing for us, but they keep exploiting our planes and taking the liviling hood of means from our people.

The surviving father told citi news that his situation is not easy for him but with support from his family and colleagues he is getting better.

”The situation i found myself now , although is not that easy to take, but as a man i’m trying to manage the situation on the ground by the help of my colleagues from the area. They are giving me a lot of advice and other support”.

He pleaded to the government to come to the aid of the residents of the area because it’s dominated by people who are mostly fisher folks.
