Ministry of Health Advances Cardiovascular Care Nationwide

The Ministry of Health has taken a major step forward in strengthening cardiovascular care across the country following a donation of medical equipment valued at over GH₵6 million from AYA and its partners under the AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative.

At a launch event in Accra, the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, unveiled revised national guidelines for cardiovascular disease (CVD) management. The updated protocols, alongside new Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) implementation booklets and training manuals, are designed to standardize care and enhance frontline service delivery nationwide.

Hon. Akandoh emphasized that the combined effort will accelerate the government’s Free Primary Healthcare agenda by improving early detection and management of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

The donated equipment—including ECG machines, defibrillators, glucometers, and blood pressure monitors—will be distributed to 179 health facilities across seven regions, significantly boosting diagnostic and treatment capacity.

Speaking on behalf of the GIZ Country Director, Mr. Wilhelm Hugo underscored the importance of partnerships in tackling non-communicable diseases and reaffirmed GIZ’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s health system.

This intervention, officials noted, reinforces the Ministry’s commitment to building a resilient, equitable, and high-quality healthcare system capable of addressing the growing burden of cardiovascular disease.
