President John Dramani Mahama has called for stronger climate finance, adaptation support, and increased investment in renewable energy to help developing nations confront the escalating impacts of climate change.
Africa’s Platform for Climate Action
Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s upcoming 2027 AU Chairmanship, combined with its leadership of the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change, will serve as a vital platform to advance Africa’s interests in global climate negotiations. He noted that extreme weather events across continents underscore the urgency of equitable climate action.
Digital Divide and AI Governance
Turning to technology, Mahama urged the Non-Aligned Movement to ensure that developing countries are not reduced to mere consumers of technology. Instead, he called for NAM members to become active participants in technological innovation, development, and governance, particularly in the fast‑evolving field of artificial intelligence. “We must not be left behind in shaping the rules of the digital age,” he warned.
Ghana’s Expanding Global Role
The intervention highlights Ghana’s growing leadership in international diplomacy, with Mahama positioning the country at the forefront of both climate justice and digital governance debates. His call reflects a broader push for fairer global systems that empower the Global South.
