President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, and the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, to withdraw the Private Member’s Bill that seeks to repeal the Act establishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The directive, contained in an official statement issued by the Presidency and signed by the President’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, underscores Mahama’s renewed commitment to strengthening the OSP as a central institution in Ghana’s anti-corruption architecture.
According to the statement, the President’s request follows his recent public affirmation of support for the OSP during a meeting with the National Peace Council. He described the OSP as “a vital cog in the fight against corruption” and emphasized the need to reinforce—not dismantle—the office.
The President further urged the OSP to step up its efforts to build public trust by aggressively confronting corruption in line with its statutory mandate. He reiterated his expectation that the office must deliver on the objectives that informed its establishment.
The statement concluded with the assurance that the Mahama administration views anti-corruption reforms as a top priority and considers the strengthening of independent accountability institutions essential to restoring confidence in governance.
