Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie Sworn In as Ghana’s New Chief Justice

 Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has officially assumed office as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana following his swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House on Monday, November 17, 2025. The oath of office was administered by President John Dramani Mahama, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the nation’s judiciary.

His appointment, endorsed by Parliament last week, comes after the dismissal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

The ceremony drew an audience of distinguished personalities, including the Vice President, members of the Council of State, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, parliamentary leadership, Supreme Court Justices, and the new Chief Justice’s family.

In his remarks, President Mahama praised Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s wealth of experience and unwavering dedication to the rule of law. He urged him to safeguard judicial independence and accelerate the resolution of cases to strengthen public confidence in the courts.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, after taking the official oaths, outlined his vision for the judiciary, pledging to pursue wide-ranging institutional reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency and accessibility.

A Career of Distinction

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s elevation to the highest judicial office crowns a career marked by scholarship and service.

  • Education: University of Ghana School of Law; Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Constitutional Theory from Oxford University.
  • Judicial Service: Appointed to the High Court in 1993, elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2005, and joined the Supreme Court in 2012.
  • Expertise: Renowned authority in Constitutional Law and Human Rights.
  • Supreme Court Record: Authored 87 majority opinions, with significant contributions in land ownership disputes and electoral petitions.

His appointment is widely expected to provide stability and continuity within the judiciary, combining decades of practical experience with deep academic insight.
