Ghana Mourns Citizens Killed in Burkina Faso Terror Attack; Government Issues New Travel Guidelines

The Government of Ghana has confirmed that eight Ghanaian nationals have lost their lives following a terrorist attack in Titao, northern Burkina Faso, on 14 February 2026.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, seven members of the Ghana National Tomatoes Traders and Transporters Association were initially killed during the assault while conducting lawful trading activities in the area. A critically injured compatriot, also a member of the Association, later succumbed to wounds sustained in the attack.

President John Mahama has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with the Government and people of Burkina Faso. He condemned the “mindless act of terror,” stressing the urgent need for stronger regional cooperation on security, a call Ghana reiterated at last month’s High-Level Consultative Conference on Regional Cooperation and Security.

In response, the Government has ordered immediate medical evacuation of injured Ghanaian victims from Burkina Faso. The Ghana Air Force is carrying out the evacuation, with the victims expected to arrive in Ghana later today. Ghana’s Ambassador in Burkina Faso and Embassy staff are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining direct contact with affected citizens.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also announced new travel guidelines for high-risk areas within the sub-region. Citizens are urged to restrict movement, maintain regular communication with Ghanaian Embassies, and ensure accessibility of identification documents. The Ministry emphasized that Embassies and High Commissions in selected jurisdictions are on high consular alert to provide assistance.

The Government reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and acknowledged the cooperation of Burkina Faso authorities in facilitating interventions.
