The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has issued a public advisory to Ghanaians living in and visiting South Africa, urging them to remain vigilant and avoid areas likely to be affected by a planned protest scheduled for September 30, 2026.
The advisory follows reports of a protest action expected to take place in parts of South Africa and linked to the March and March movement and other groups campaigning against undocumented immigration.
According to the High Commission, Ghanaians, particularly those residing in areas where demonstrations or public gatherings are anticipated, including central business districts, should exercise caution and take measures to ensure their personal safety.
The mission advised nationals to avoid all demonstrations, protest gatherings, marches and potential areas of confrontation, even where such activities appear peaceful. It also urged citizens to limit non-essential movement on the day of the protest, especially in locations where protest activities have been reported or are anticipated.
The High Commission further cautioned against unnecessary travel to central business districts, transport hubs, taxi ranks, major intersections and other places where large crowds may gather. Ghanaians were also encouraged to remain alert to possible roadblocks, disruptions to public transportation and sudden changes to security conditions.
The advisory urged nationals to refrain from engaging in protests or discussions related to immigration and political issues, warning against involvement in arguments or confrontations that could compromise their safety.
In addition, the mission encouraged Ghanaians to carry valid identification and travel documents, keep mobile phones fully charged, maintain regular contact with family members and friends, and ensure adequate supplies of essential items, particularly for children, elderly persons and individuals with medical conditions.
The High Commission also advised Ghanaian residents to closely follow instructions issued by the South African Police Service and other relevant authorities, while relying only on verified information from credible sources.
Calling for calm, the mission appealed to all Ghanaians in South Africa to remain law-abiding and cooperate with local authorities, stressing that their welfare and safety remain its highest priority.
“The welfare and safety of Ghanaian nationals remain a priority of the High Commission,” the advisory stated.
