Ghana Expels Three Israelis in Reciprocal Response to Deportation of Citizens

The Government of Ghana has deported three Israeli nationals in retaliation for what it described as the “ill-treatment and unjustified deportation” of Ghanaian citizens by Israeli authorities, a move aimed at upholding the dignity of its nationals abroad.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 10, 2025, officials confirmed that the decision followed the removal of three Ghanaians from Israel under what the ministry termed “unacceptable” circumstances. Accra responded by expelling three Israelis who had recently entered the country.

Announcing the measure on his Facebook page, the Foreign Affairs Minister wrote: “The government of Ghana has been compelled to activate appropriate reciprocal action by deporting three Israelis who arrived in Ghana earlier today following the ill-treatment and unwarranted deportation of three Ghanaians. Both Governments have now agreed to an amicable resolution.”

The ministry further disclosed that the Charge d’Affaires ad interim of the Israeli Embassy was summoned in the absence of the Ambassador, as both sides committed to resolving the matter amicably.

Reaffirming Ghana’s stance, the government stressed its obligation to protect the dignity of its citizens while insisting that visitors from friendly nations must also be treated with respect.

“The Government of Ghana will continue to safeguard the dignity of its nationals and also that of other nationals.”

“Ghana deeply values our relations with all friendly countries and expects our citizens to be treated with dignity and respect in much the same way as other governments expect Ghana to treat their nationals.”

The move comes in the wake of a widely reported incident on December 7, 2025, when several Ghanaian travellers were detained or deported upon arrival at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport. Among them were four members of a parliamentary delegation attending an international cybersecurity conference in Tel Aviv. Three others were denied entry and sent back on the next available flight.

Earlier, the Foreign Affairs Ministry had condemned the actions of Israeli authorities as “inhumane and traumatic,” alleging that Ghanaian travellers were “deliberately targeted.”

By expelling the three Israelis, Ghana has signaled that mistreatment of its citizens will be met with firm but measured action.

This development highlights Ghana’s broader demand for reciprocal respect in international travel and diplomacy and poses a significant test for relations between Accra and Tel Aviv.
