GES Marks International Day for Women and Girls in Science with STEM Exhibition

The Ghana Education Service (GES), through its National STEM Resource Unit, has commemorated the International Day for Women and Girls in Science with a vibrant programme held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. The celebration, themed “GirlsInTech: From Vision to Impact – Redefining STEM by Closing the Gender Gap”, showcased the creativity and innovation of young female students in science and technology.

The event opened with a project exhibition featuring groundbreaking scientific works led by girls, underscoring their vital contributions to STEM education and practice. Students from Lawson Memorial JHS, The Apostolic Montessori, Chief Bello International School, and Gold Avenue School actively engaged with the exhibits, asking probing questions and exploring new ideas.

Professor Smile Gavua Dzisi, Deputy Director-General (Management Services), chaired the programme. In her remarks, she highlighted the bright future of science and urged girls to see themselves as leaders in that journey. She encouraged them to be curious, ask bold questions, and use their voices confidently, while also calling on boys to champion and support the ideas of their female peers. She reminded facilitators of their responsibility to mentor responsibly and protect the vulnerability of young girls.

Mrs. Olivia Serwaa Opare, Director of the Science Education Unit, reinforced the message by urging girls to compete confidently with their male counterparts and pursue STEM opportunities with determination.

The celebration was organised in partnership with UNESCO and supported by Experimento Ghana and PEN, whose collaboration amplified the impact of the programme.

This year’s commemoration not only celebrated the achievements of girls in science but also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to closing the gender gap in STEM education and empowering the next generation of innovators.
