GES Boss Sacked

Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has been fired.

In a letter dated Monday, October 17, 2022, the Office of the President notified the termination of Prof. Opoku Amankwah’s appointment.

Prof. Opoku-Amankwa was appointed in April 2017, however a special reference was made to his secondment from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in January 2021. (KNUST).

The Vice President, Chief of Staff, the Minister of Education, the Board Chairperson of the Ghana Education Service, the Vice Chancellor of KNUST, and the Registrar of the same institution were all copied in the letter.

“The Ministry of Education has informed this Office that the exigencies that required your skills and expertise as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service do not exist any longer”, the letter stated.

Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa once said publicly that the government’s much-touted Free Senior High School (SHS) program was being reviewed due to practical issues confronting second-cycle schools.

Following discrepancies by government authorities in the education sector, he later refuted the reports ascribed to him.

Professor Opoku-Amankwa has been directed to return to KNUST.

“The President thanks you for your service to the nation and wishes you the very best in your future endeavours”, the letter from the Presidency signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, concluded.
