The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has received a delegation led by the Municipal Chief Executive for Ablekuma West, Hon. George Kpakpo Allotey, together with representatives of traders affected by the recent Dansoman market fire.
The visit was to formally present a copy of the incident report to the Minister and to discuss coordinated response measures, recovery actions, and next steps needed to restore economic activities at the market.
Presenting the report, the traders appealed for urgent support, including logistical and material assistance, financial relief, and the reconstruction of the market to enable them to resume their livelihoods and repay debts incurred as a result of the fire. They also expressed readiness to undergo psychosocial support services, acknowledging the emotional and mental toll of the incident.
The group further conveyed appreciation for relief items already received from the state through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
In her remarks, Dr. Lartey assured the delegation of the Ministry’s commitment to coordinating relief and recovery efforts with relevant agencies to deliver immediate interventions. She outlined the Ministry’s next steps guided by the recommendations contained in the report and urged the MCE to prioritize the urgent reconstruction of the market.
The Minister emphasized that the new market should reflect modern standards, including accessibility for persons with disabilities, enhanced safety features, improved health and sanitation systems, the provision of a crèche to support working mothers, and alignment with the Government’s 24-hour economy agenda.
The delegation expressed appreciation for the Minister’s commitment and pledged to work closely with the Ministry toward restoring normalcy and rebuilding the market.
