Emergency shutdown of Weija treatment plant disrupts water supply in Accra West

Residents in western Accra are experiencing an unexpected disruption in water supply following an emergency shutdown of the Weija Water Treatment Plant by Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL), Accra West Region.

According to GWL officials, the facility was taken offline at 10:00 a.m. today to allow for urgent repair works on major pipelines that serve several densely populated communities. The shutdown is expected to last until 5:00 p.m., pending successful completion of the maintenance operations.

Areas affected by the interruption include Korle-Bu, Dansoman, Mamprobi, Gbawe, Weija, Malam, Anyaa, Kwashieman, Ablekuma, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Tesano, Odorkor, Sowutuom, Lapaz, parts of Achimota, the North Industrial Area, and surrounding neighborhoods.

GWL has appealed to residents to conserve water during this period and has reassured the public that its engineering team is working diligently to restore supply as soon as possible.

“We regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers as we work to ensure the integrity of our water supply infrastructure,” the statement read.

Residents who had not stored adequate water prior to the shutdown have expressed concern over the short notice, urging authorities to improve communication during such emergencies in the future.
