Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has confirmed that although his delegation was received at the Gbewaa Palace on Tuesday, August 5, the Overlord of Dagbon declined to accept an apology issued on behalf of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
The Minister’s visit formed part of a diplomatic initiative aimed at easing tensions between NEDCo and the traditional leadership in the Northern Region, following recent disputes over electricity supply.
Initial reports had suggested that the Overlord refused to meet with the delegation, demanding that power be fully restored to all affected areas before any dialogue could begin.
Speaking to Myjoyonline, Mr. Jinapor clarified, “The Overlord welcomed us, but he rejected the apology we offered on behalf of the NEDCo boss.”
NEDCo has faced widespread backlash in recent weeks for disconnecting electricity to parts of Tamale, including prominent traditional zones. The move has been perceived as a slight against the Dagbon chieftaincy, prompting public demonstrations and expressions of anger from residents.
The company, however, has defended its actions, citing safety concerns. It claims that its field workers have encountered threats and interference while attempting to carry out their duties.
“We were compelled to halt operations in order to safeguard our staff,” a company spokesperson stated.
Despite the Minister’s outreach, the impasse remains unresolved, with growing pressure on NEDCo to restore power and mend relations with the Dagbon traditional council.
