Compassion in Action: Mahama’s Plan to Elevate Zongo Healthcare

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s Zongo communities, vowing to address their unique health and infrastructure needs.

Speaking at the Ghana National Muslims Conference in Accra, Mahama outlined plans to establish specialized mortuary facilities for Islamic burial rites and customs, a continuation of his 2020 promise to prioritize Muslim communities’ dignity and needs.

Key Initiatives:

– Specialized Mortuary Facilities: Designed to handle deceased Muslims according to Islamic standards
– Improved Health Services: Equipping local health centers with modern medical resources and infrastructure
– Halal Compliant Meat Processing: Collaborating with the private sector to build new abattoirs and upgrade existing ones to meet WHO standards and halal requirements
– Rehabilitation Projects: Ensuring hygienic and efficient meat processing in communities like Tulaku

Mahama emphasized that these initiatives will benefit not only Zongo residents but also Ghana’s larger Muslim community, enhancing food security and public health standards.

He also promised to establish Islamic secondary schools and health centers in Zongo areas, as outlined in the NDC’s manifesto

“We will follow our promise in 2020 to establish specialised places for the handling of bodies of Muslims who pass away in order that they are handled according to Islamic rights.

“We will also equip health facilities in Muslim communities with relevant health infrastructure and partner with the private sector to build new abattoirs in communities such as Tulaku and rehabilitate existing abattoirs to conform with World Health Organization standards and introduce halal standards in terms of handling meat and meat products.”

Mahama’s commitment to Zongo communities is part of his broader vision for national development, focusing on education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.

He has also promised to award scholarships to brilliant but needy students in Zongo communities and support Arabic teachers with monthly allowances
