Ghana’s Black Queens were defeated 2–0 by England in an international friendly played at St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday.
England struck early, opening the scoring in the sixth minute when Lucia Kendall pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area and finished from close range.

The Lionesses dominated possession for much of the contest, creating several opportunities and striking the frame of the goal on multiple occasions. Ghana, however, remained organized defensively and managed to restrict the damage in the opening half.
Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan produced key saves, notably denying Missy Bo Kearns from close range, as England pressed for a second goal.
The Black Queens grew stronger as the game progressed, showing more confidence in midfield battles and posing threats on the counterattack. Despite carving out a few half-chances, they were unable to break through in the final third.

England sealed victory in stoppage time when substitute Alessia Russo earned a penalty for handball and converted it to secure the 2–0 result.
Head coach Kim Björkegren commended his players’ effort, stressing perspective and progress.
“As a coach, you always want to win,” he said. “But we are 67th in the world and faced a team that may be the best in the world right now. We can be proud of our performance, and we feel we are moving in the right direction.”
The Black Queens will now shift focus to preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
