Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken aim at the Electoral Commission (EC), accusing it of acting with “indecent haste” in announcing a rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election.
Dr. Bawumia argued that the Commission’s decision disregards ongoing judicial proceedings at both the High Court and the Supreme Court involving New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Matthew Nyindam. He maintained that it is inappropriate for the EC to move forward as though the legal challenges have been settled, when none of Nyindam’s appeals have yet been determined.
Citing precedent, Dr. Bawumia pointed to the cases of Dan Kwasi Abodakpi and James Gyakye Quayson, where Parliament and state institutions waited until all court processes had concluded before taking action. He suggested that the current stance by the NDC government and its allied institutions represents a departure from Ghana’s established democratic traditions.
He cautioned that bypassing these safeguards undermines the integrity of the country’s governance structures and sets a troubling precedent where political expediency takes precedence over respect for the rule of law.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that Nyindam must be allowed to fully exhaust his legal rights before any electoral decisions are made.
