Bank of Ghana, Central Bank of Liberia Strengthen Cooperation on Payment Systems Development

The Bank of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Central Bank of Liberia through enhanced technical cooperation and knowledge sharing following a courtesy visit by the Executive Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia, Henry F. Saamoi, and his delegation to Bank Square in Accra.

The visit forms part of ongoing collaboration between the two institutions following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) earlier this year aimed at promoting capacity building, technical cooperation and the exchange of expertise.

The meeting was chaired by the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu.

During the engagement, the Liberian delegation expressed appreciation to the Bank of Ghana for its support under the MoU and highlighted its desire to learn from Ghana’s experience in developing and strengthening modern payment systems infrastructure.

A major focus of discussions was Ghana’s successful establishment of the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), which has played a pivotal role in advancing digital payments and financial transactions in the country.

The Central Bank of Liberia indicated its interest in drawing lessons from Ghana’s experience, particularly regarding the institutional arrangements, implementation processes and operational structures that underpinned the development of GhIPSS, as Liberia works to strengthen its own payment systems framework.

Speaking during the meeting, Mrs. Asante-Asiedu reiterated the Bank of Ghana’s readiness to continue supporting Liberia through sustained collaboration, technical assistance and knowledge transfer initiatives.

She underscored the importance of peer learning, regional cooperation and capacity building in building resilient, innovative and efficient financial systems across the African continent.

According to her, closer cooperation among African central banks remains essential to advancing financial inclusion, enhancing payment ecosystems and promoting economic integration.

The visit further highlighted the strong partnership between the Bank of Ghana and the Central Bank of Liberia and their shared commitment to supporting financial sector development in the West African sub-region.

The engagement is expected to deepen collaboration between the two institutions while contributing to efforts aimed at modernising payment systems and strengthening financial sector resilience across the region.
