The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic helicopter crash that occurred in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The crash claimed the lives of eight individuals, including Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
In a statement issued from Addis Ababa, the AU Chairperson extended his heartfelt condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the Government and people of Ghana, as well as the bereaved families of the victims. He also offered words of comfort to the Ghana Armed Forces and the ruling National Democratic Congress, who are mourning the loss of key national figures.
“The African Union stands firmly with Ghana in this moment of national mourning,” H.E. Youssouf stated. “We honour the memory of those who have fallen in the line of duty and pray that their souls rest in eternal peace.”
The ill-fated helicopter was en route to Obuasi for the launch of a responsible mining programme when it crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom area. The incident has sparked nationwide grief, with tributes pouring in from leaders across the continent.
