Henry Asante Twum, head of communications at Ghana Football Association, says it is important for more attention to be given to players who have desire to represent Ghana rather than those who are not ready to represent Ghana.
His comment came as a call for players abroad who are competent to play for the national team be pursued, intensify following the Black Stars qualification for the world cup. While discussing eligibility of the names of players who come most in these debates like Cullum Odoi, Tariq lamptey and Mohammed Salisu, Mr. Henry Asante said chasing such players is instigated by the recommendation of the head coach.
It is the coach’s decision. If tomorrow, the new coach of the Black Stars thinks that we need Tariq, Hudson, or whoever is available, we look at the regulations and the possibility of getting them,” he said. “If it’s within our reach, we pursue it.” He added.
Mr. Henry Twum also suggested that more attention should be directed towards players who have expressed a desire to play for the country rather than those who are yet to make up their mind whether to represent Ghana or not. He again added that he thinks its time they focus on players who are ready and willing to play than players who are still dragging their feet.
Mr. Twum earlier indicated that Southampton defender, Mohammed Salisu had been approached several times by the GFA but had not opted to play for Ghana.
“We’ve made overtures, about four or five times. C.K Akonnor tried, he wasn’t successful, Milovan tried and he wasn’t successful,” he said.
He concluded that the current Black Star coach tried to recruit Salisu for the world cup playoff against Nigeria but did not succeed.
