The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will host the national flagship edition of the World Cleanup Day on Saturday, October 3, as part of activities to mark this year’s National Sanitation Day.
A press release issued by the Assembly said the exercise is being organized under the theme, “National Sanitation Day: Local Actions Yielding National Impact,” and seeks to promote collective action towards improving environmental sanitation.
According to the statement, the clean-up exercise will be held simultaneously across three sub-metropolitan areas, focusing on desilting drains, general cleaning and refuse collection at London Market and Rawlings Park in Ashiedu Keteke, Tuesday Market and Camara in Ablekuma South, and Circle Neoplan in Okaikoi South.
The Assembly said the initiative aligns with the national sanitation agenda championed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim.
To ensure maximum participation, the AMA has directed all shops, markets and other commercial establishments within its jurisdiction to temporarily suspend business operations from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on the day of the exercise.
Residents and businesses have been urged to actively participate by desilting drains, sweeping streets, clearing refuse and cleaning their surroundings.
The Assembly noted that Public Health Officers, popularly known as Sama-Sama officers, together with AMA sanitation task force personnel, would be deployed across the metropolis to monitor compliance and enforce sanitation regulations.
It warned that persons who fail to comply with the directive could face prosecution and penalties prescribed by law.
The AMA further appealed to corporate institutions, non-governmental organisations, community-based groups, youth organisations and schools to support the exercise through active participation and community mobilisation efforts.
The Assembly stressed that maintaining a clean city requires the collective commitment of residents and stakeholders and cannot be achieved by the AMA alone.
It therefore called on all citizens to demonstrate environmental responsibility through sustained action and community participation to help create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Accra.
