The expansion of the Accra-Tema Motorway is scheduled to be finalized by August 2, 2027, following the clearance of all outstanding payments to contractors engaged in the project.
This assurance was provided by Project Manager, Engineer Ben Sackey, during an inspection tour led by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, on Tuesday, March 31.
The Roads Minister emphasized that the timeline remains unchanged. “We have not programmed for an extension, so we are trusting that we can maintain the same completion date of August 2, 2027,” Engineer Sackey stated during the visit.
Contractors, however, pointed out obstacles that could hinder progress. Chief among these is the relocation of utility lines, a complicated undertaking they warned could disrupt the schedule if not handled effectively.
Work on the motorway’s reconstruction and expansion commenced on January 2, 2024. The 19.5-kilometre project, stretching from the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout to the Tema Roundabout, is designed to create a 10-lane carriageway but has experienced delays since its launch.
Despite these challenges, project officials remain optimistic. They believe that with efficient coordination, the roundabout will be completed on time, easing congestion and improving traffic flow along one of Accra’s busiest routes.
