Ghana will join education leaders, researchers, innovators, financiers, academics and development partners from across West Africa as Accra hosts the sub‑region’s second High‑Level Conference on Scaling Education Initiatives in Emergencies from September 29–30, 2026.
The conference will confront a pressing question: What happens to a child’s education when conflict, flooding or a pandemic shuts down a school? Participants are expected to examine practical solutions for keeping children learning when emergencies disrupt normal schooling.
Speaking ahead of the gathering, Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, highlighted Ghana’s experiences during the COVID‑19 pandemic, the Akosombo Dam spillage and conflicts such as those affecting Bawku. He noted that these crises have displaced learners, disrupted teaching and learning, and damaged educational infrastructure.
The Minister called for successful interventions to be scaled beyond pilot projects, stronger financing mechanisms for education in emergencies, and greater regional cooperation. “Emergencies must not halt the future of our children. We need resilient systems that ensure continuity of learning,” he emphasized.
The conference is expected to produce actionable recommendations to strengthen education systems across West Africa, ensuring that children can continue learning even in the face of conflict, climate disasters or health crises.
