ECOWAS Presidents have unanimously endorsed the resolution of the Ministerial Council naming former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama as the sole West African candidate for the African Union (AU) Chairmanship in 2027.
The decisive backing by the Heads of State and Government clears all hurdles, effectively positioning Mahama as the AU Chairperson‑in‑waiting when the rotating leadership reaches West Africa’s turn.

In his remarks, President Mahama expressed deep gratitude to his peers and pledged to rise to the occasion. “I will meet the legitimate high expectations of our continent,” he assured, noting that the endorsement reflects confidence in his leadership and commitment to Africa’s collective progress.
The endorsement marks a significant moment for West Africa, strengthening the region’s influence within the AU and setting the stage for Mahama’s leadership at a time when Africa faces pressing challenges in governance, security, and development.
