All roads lead to Parliament today as Ewurabena Aubynn, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, prepares to be officially sworn in by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin.
Madam Aubynn, who stood on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emerged victorious in a closely contested parliamentary rerun held earlier this month across 19 polling stations in the constituency. She polled 34,090 votes, narrowly edging out her closest contender, Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 33,881 votes.
The rerun became necessary after the Electoral Commission (EC) annulled the results of the December 2024 general elections in the area, citing electoral irregularities, including unauthenticated pink sheets, unsigned result forms, and breaches in collation procedures. The decision followed concerns raised by political parties and independent observers.
With her swearing-in, the NDC now commands a two-thirds majority in the 275-member Parliament, a development that could significantly shape the party’s legislative agenda from constitutional amendments to key national reforms.
Today’s ceremony, expected to take place during the sitting of Parliament, will be attended by fellow MPs, party stalwarts, and invited dignitaries. For the NDC, it marks a strategic milestone in consolidating its influence in the House.
