NPP Rejects Claims of Planned Minority Leadership Shake-Up

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed reports suggesting that it is considering changes to its parliamentary leadership, insisting that no discussions have been held regarding the replacement of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin or any member of the current leadership team.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, October 29, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, described the reports as false and aimed at creating disunity within the Minority Caucus in Parliament.

According to him, the party remains satisfied with the performance of the current parliamentary leadership and has not contemplated any reshuffle.

“Let me state it categorically. The party has never had any meeting. The party has never thought about even deliberating to change the leadership in Parliament. We have not. So those who are busily peddling lies and trying to create this confusion among the leadership in Parliament and the mighty Minority caucus will not succeed,” he said.

Mr. Kodua Frimpong stressed that the leadership of the Minority Caucus continues to enjoy the full confidence of the party and urged members and supporters to disregard claims of an impending leadership change.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary also cautioned individuals campaigning publicly to be considered as running mates for the party’s flagbearer in the 2028 general elections.

He criticized the growing trend of aspirants using social media platforms and bloggers to promote themselves for the position, arguing that such activities are inconsistent with the party’s constitutional provisions.

According to him, the NPP Constitution does not provide for the selection of a running mate through campaigning or contestation, noting that the decision rests solely with the party’s presidential candidate in consultation with the National Council.

“There is nowhere in our constitution which says that running mate is selected through contest or through campaign. So the people who are busily urging bloggers to promote themselves, you are wrong,” he stated.

His remarks come amid increasing speculation within political circles over potential running mates and the future composition of the party’s leadership as it prepares for the 2028 elections.

The NPP leadership has, however, maintained that attention should remain focused on strengthening the party and preparing for upcoming internal processes rather than engaging in premature campaigns for positions that have not yet become available.
