Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced that it will resume spillage at the Weija Dam beginning Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a sharp rise in water levels caused by heavy rains upstream and persistent rainfall in the Densu River catchment.
According to the company, the dam’s water level has reached 45.2 feet, edging close to the critical 46‑foot threshold. The precautionary measure, officials say, is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the dam and protect surrounding communities.
Residents living downstream have been urged to evacuate immediately to avoid potential flooding. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), District Assembly, traditional authorities, assembly members, and resident associations have been directed to coordinate evacuation and safety measures.
Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey, and adjoining areas. GWL emphasized that public cooperation is vital, noting that “the safety of residents is still our priority.”
The company assured that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as necessary.
