The Ghana Police Service has brought violent disturbances in New Winneba under control after a mob of about 300 armed individuals stormed the township on Tuesday morning, attacking residents and damaging property.
The assailants, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze, wielded guns, stones, cutlasses, and sticks as they targeted homes and stores belonging to natives of New Winneba. Police confirmed that at least 15 victims, including one officer, sustained injuries and were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba. Three fatalities have also been recorded.
In response, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to contain the situation. Inspector‑General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has since reinforced operations with a special team from the National Headquarters, supported by two armoured vehicles, to stabilize the area and prevent further escalation.
Authorities say the situation is now under control, with security presence intensified across the township. The Police Service has assured residents of its commitment to restoring calm and protecting lives and property.
