Banking Sector Assets Surge by 30.7 Percent – BOG Governor

Ghana’s banking industry has recorded a sharp expansion in total assets, rising by 30.7 percent in June 2026. The growth, according to the Bank of Ghana, was largely driven by increased deposits and strengthened shareholders’ funds.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, disclosed the figures at the Heads of Banks Meeting in Accra, noting that the asset growth reflects renewed confidence in the sector and improved capitalization. “The banking sector continues to demonstrate resilience, with deposits and equity injections providing the backbone for expansion,” he said.

The surge in assets comes on the back of recent improvements in solvency, with the Capital Adequacy Ratio doubling within a year. Analysts say the twin developments — stronger solvency and asset growth — point to a healthier financial system capable of supporting broader economic recovery.

Dr. Asiama emphasized that the central bank will maintain vigilance over liquidity and credit conditions to ensure that the gains translate into increased lending to businesses and households. He urged banks to channel their stronger balance sheets into productive investments that stimulate growth and job creation.

The meeting brought together chief executives of commercial banks and financial stakeholders to review sector performance and chart strategies for sustaining momentum.
