6 Dead, Several Injured in Stampede at Ghana Armed Forces Recruitment Exercise

A tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, 12th November, 2025 morning has left six potential recruits dead and several others injured during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) 2025/2026 recruitment exercise.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Public Relations at the GAF Headquarters, preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred when a large crowd of applicants breached security protocols and rushed into the gates ahead of the scheduled screening at around 6:20 a.m.

“The unfortunate incident led to the death of six potential recruits and many others injured,” the statement said. It added that the injured are receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital.

Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director-General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, expressed the institution’s deep regret over the incident, extending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a swift recovery to those injured.

“The Ghana Armed Forces assures the general public that medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilise affected individuals. Meanwhile, arrangements are being made to notify the families of the deceased,” the statement noted.

The recruitment exercise, which was meant to select new entrants into the Armed Forces, drew thousands of hopeful applicants from across the country. Authorities say further updates will be provided as investigations continue.

The GAF has also appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with officials as they manage the aftermath of the tragedy.
