The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State and President of the Asogli Traditional Area, Togbe Afede XIV, has called for stronger national dedication to reviving Ghana’s agricultural sector.
Speaking as Chairman at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration in Ho on Friday, December 5, 2025, he commended farmers for their crucial role in national development but cautioned that the sector continues to grapple with major challenges.
“Indeed, farmers have played important roles in our country. They feed us, their exports from crops like cocoa and other cash crops give us the foreign exchange that we need, and the sector also employs about 44% of the workforce,” he said.
Togbe Afede stressed that while farmers have shown resilience, they require both encouragement and practical support to sustain their efforts.
“This is why the inspirational aspects where we inspire our farmers are important, so they can do more. Of course, we have the government that will commit to doing more in that regard, while we, the citizens, commit to eating Ghana, so we can help grow Ghana and secure a future for the motherland,” he added.
He expressed concern about declining performance in key crops, particularly cocoa, recalling his recent visit to Hohoe to commission a cocoa processing factory as a reminder of the sector’s untapped potential.
“For a country that could do more than a million bags in a particular year, we are now struggling to add value to our cocoa. We must all work hard to ensure that the value of the product goes up so that value addition can be visible,” he said.
Togbe Afede further noted that Ghana’s output in cotton and coffee has also fallen short of past levels, stressing that “a lot of work is required on the part of all of us.”
