Roads Minister Warns Against Financial Indiscipline, Inaugurates Advisory Board

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has inaugurated the Ministry’s Ministerial Advisory Board, cautioning against financial recklessness in the sector.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, December 9, the Minister disclosed that in 2024 alone, contracts worth more than GH¢30 billion were awarded without commencement authorisation certificates, a practice he described as “unacceptable and unsustainable.”

Mr Agbodza further revealed that the Ministry is weighed down by debts exceeding GH¢40 billion for completed works yet to be paid, leaving many contractors in financial distress.

“We are also in huge debt in excess of GHS40 billion for work done and not paid for, and contractors are in distress. We are very grateful that in the past one month alone we have paid close to 6 billion towards retiring part of that indebtedness,” he stated.

The Minister expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Finance for releasing GH¢6 billion to help reduce the arrears.

He charged the newly constituted Advisory Board to assist the Ministry in restoring discipline, strengthening oversight, and ensuring value for money in the delivery of road infrastructure projects nationwide.
