President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that a significant share of road contracts under the government’s flagship Big Push infrastructure programme has been awarded to the Volta Region.
Speaking at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration in Ho on Friday, December 5, the President said the region has emerged as one of the major beneficiaries of the initiative, which is aimed at rapidly expanding Ghana’s road network and stimulating economic growth across all regions.
“A good percentage of the roads awarded under the Big Push are from the Volta Region,” President Mahama stated, stressing that the allocation reflects a deliberate effort to bridge infrastructure gaps and support communities that have long struggled with transportation challenges.
He explained that improving roads in the Volta Region is critical for boosting agricultural productivity, cutting down post-harvest losses, and ensuring farmers can move their produce efficiently to markets.
According to him, the Big Push programme is designed not only to modernise national infrastructure but also to directly improve livelihoods by enhancing feeder roads, trunk roads and major highways that sustain trade and agriculture.
President Mahama assured farmers and residents that his administration remains committed to completing ongoing projects and speeding up work on new corridors to better integrate rural communities into the national economy.
He also praised farmers for their resilience and contributions to Ghana’s food security, noting that improved infrastructure will be key to sustaining their efforts and driving national development.
