NPP Youth Wing, AFFA Condemn Arrest of TikTok Stars and Social Commentator

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticized the Ghana Police Service over the arrest of TikTok personalities Fante Comedy and AY, as well as social commentator Sir-Obama Pokuase, describing the actions as a waste of police resources and an affront to free speech.

In a statement signed by National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, the group said it was “disdainful” for the police to detain young people over comments deemed inappropriate. Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof were arrested after a viral video surfaced in which they allegedly threatened to kill former President John Mahama and his wife.

While acknowledging the remarks were “unsavoury,” the NPP Youth Wing argued they were harmless and within the bounds of free expression. The group further accused the police of bias, alleging selective enforcement of the law against individuals perceived to support the NPP, while ignoring inflammatory statements from opposition-aligned activists.

In a related development, the Alliance for Footsoldiers Advocacy (AFFA) has demanded the immediate release of Sir-Obama Pokuase, who was reportedly picked up by National Security operatives. His arrest followed claims on Facebook alleging that some MG3 weapons were in the possession of civilians under the watch of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tetteh Christian Yohuno.

AFFA condemned the arrest and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding it, warning against what it sees as a growing trend of intimidation against outspoken citizens.
