Minority Raises Concerns Over Declining Conditions in Fishing Communities

The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns about deteriorating conditions in Ghana’s fishing communities, accusing the government of neglect and logistical shortcomings that endanger food security and livelihoods.

In a statement issued to mark National Farmers’ Day on Friday, December 5, the Minority pointed to the severe lack of premix fuel in Keta and other coastal towns, which has forced fishing boats to remain idle and left families struggling to cope.

“A government that cannot ensure the reliable distribution of a fundamental input like premix fuel has failed in its most basic duty to sustain a critical sector. We stand in solidarity with the fishermen and women of Keta and all coastal and inland fishing communities,” the statement said.

The Minority further urged the government to expand subsidies, intensify enforcement against illegal fishing, modernize the sector with AI-driven technologies, and improve landing sites, cold storage facilities, and logistics to enhance productivity.

The opposition cautioned that without swift intervention, the continued neglect of fishing communities will undermine Ghana’s food security and weaken coastal economies.
