Heath Goldfields Under Probe: Lands Ministry Launches Investigation into Bogoso-Prestea Mine Operations

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has begun an investigation into Heath Goldfields Limited over alleged regulatory breaches, financial irregularities, and questionable mining practices at the Bogoso-Prestea Mine in the Western Region.

According to a report by The Herald on Monday, October 27, 2025, the company whose board includes former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, is accused of allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities similar to galamsey. The report also alleges that Heath Goldfields made misleading claims about a supposed US$75 million investment and progress at the mine.

In response, Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has set up a five-member committee to visit the site and evaluate the company’s financial and technical capacity to operate.

The committee, chaired by the Minister’s Chief Advisor, Professor Jerry S. Y. Kumar, includes mining executive A. A. Amoah, former EPA Director Ransford Sekyi, former Chief Inspector of Mines Obiri-Yeboa Twumasi, and Jonathan, a financial officer from the Damang Mine.

The team has three days to submit its findings but is reportedly worried about the absence of a valid mining lease and other required documents for Heath Goldfields’ operations.

Heath Goldfields Limited was established during the tenure of former Lands Minister Samuel Abdulai Jinapor under the Akufo Addo administration. The company has faced several controversies, including a pending US$1 billion arbitration case against Ghana in Europe.

Meanwhile, the Minerals Commission has also come under scrutiny for possible conflicts of interest, amid claims it acted as both regulator and interim operator of the mine . A move critics say could compromise its neutrality.
