Ghana’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation into a viral video in which an American citizen, Arianna Naomi Mackey, claimed she was kidnapped and robbed in Accra by men she alleged were police officers.
According to a press release dated December 9, 2025, the Ghana Police Service said the woman alleged she was abducted by five masked men purported to be officers on snap-check duty in the capital and robbed of an unspecified amount of money.
Preliminary police findings indicate the video was recorded at a hotel in Accra, where Mackey and two companions were staying. Investigators confirmed that she checked out of the hotel on December 5, 2025, and left Ghana the same day through Kotoka International Airport.
Police said they contacted Mackey to assist with investigations, but she reportedly told officers she was outside the country and could not provide the names of the alleged officers or the registration number of the vehicle involved.
The CID further stated that when asked to provide contact details of a friend who was reportedly with her during the incident, Mackey indicated that the friend did not wish to be involved in the probe.
Investigators said the video has since been deleted from her social media page and that efforts to reach her via WhatsApp calls and messages were unsuccessful after she allegedly declined to respond and subsequently blocked police contacts.
The Ghana Police Service said it is pursuing diplomatic channels to secure her cooperation and emphasized that it treats such allegations seriously.
“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to uncovering the facts in this case,” the CID said.
The statement was signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the Criminal Investigation Department.
