Fatal Crash on Accra–Kumasi Highway Claims Two Lives

Two people lost their lives and thirteen others sustained injuries in a tragic accident on the Anyinam–Enyiresi stretch of the Accra–Kumasi Highway on Thursday morning.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Anyinam Fire Station received a distress call at 9:21 a.m. and dispatched a six-member rescue crew led by Leading Fireman (LFM) Awuku Samuel. The team arrived at the crash site at 9:36 a.m.

The collision involved a Toyota Hiace minibus (registration number AS-4191-25) and a Honda Pilot SUV (AS-8086-14). Both vehicles were found in the middle of the road after a head-on impact.

The driver of the Honda Pilot and a female passenger were trapped in the wreckage. They were extricated by the rescue team and rushed to the Enyiresi Government Hospital, but were pronounced dead on arrival. Thirteen other victims — twelve men and one woman — had already been transported to the same facility before the crew’s arrival.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the Toyota Hiace, traveling from Nkawkaw to Accra, attempted a wrongful overtaking maneuver, lost control, and veered into the path of the oncoming Honda Pilot.

The GNFS crew cleared the wreckage and restored traffic flow before returning to base at 11:05 a.m.

The incident has once again raised concerns about reckless driving on the busy Accra–Kumasi Highway, one of Ghana’s most accident-prone routes.
