2026 World Cup draw: Uruguayan journalist Alejandro Figueredo hopes for Ghana-Uruguay pairing

Uruguayan journalist Alejandro Figueredo wants to see Ghana paired against the South American country for the second consecutive time in the group stage.

Ghana has a bitter history with Uruguay from the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where the infamous Luis Suarez handball incident happened.
The rivalry was renewed in Qatar 2022 with the Black Stars squandering a chance to avenge that painful defeat. But Figueredo has fond memories of both encounters being on the winning side.
Speaking to the head of 3Sports, Owuraku Ampofo, ahead of the 2026 World Cup draw today, he shared:
Oh, I love you so guys, because you know I have very good memories from the game against Ghana in South Africa, I’ve been there calling the game for Uruguay.
“So, for me, it was the most wonderful experience as a journalist. Obviously, you remember very good that game, we met again in Qatar in 2022, different situation, and maybe, why not, we can meet together again in next year, but I have very good memories obviously from Ghana.”
When quizzed about whether he would like to see Ghana and Uruguay paired in the same group, he answered in the affirmative.
“Yeah, probably, why not? It’s one of the chances; we are very excited about the group for Uruguay.
“We only know that we can’t be in the same group of the Conmebol teams and the other teams from the pot 2, because Uruguay will be in the pot 2, and one of the play-off, which is Bolivia, because Bolivia, Suriname and Iraq will be in the same play-off, so we can’t fight  against those teams in the group stage,” he noted.
The official draw, to be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., will start this Friday, December 5, at 4:30 p.m. GMT.
